Cloud Licensing

Everyone else offers cloud licenses.

I had a very important movie client fly in and then my usb drive which held licenses died.
very embarrassing, luckily we have SSL, Universal Audio, and Slate plug ins.
IN THE CLOUD. the engineers were able to remove all the Waves plug ins and switch to Slate, SSL, etc.. but it was not a good look in front of clients.

The customer asked “why are you using them if they aren’t supporting bullet proof redundancy?”

he was right. All the other ones we can quickly move to another computer or studio b or studio c and be running instantly. with waves we would have to do a LONG process.

This is making me reconsider renewing my contracts with Waves which isn’t cheap at all.

I don’t want to keep my licenses on HDD or USB. sorry Waves.

That’s how protools killed themselves and lost a lot of revenue.

I am just the CEO of a studio - so I clearly understand the market space and not losing revenue.

just my 0.02. take it or leave it.. but I will be leaving waves because of this,

True.

In the other hand I have a lot of plugins that use iLok but can only be activated either on the usb dongle or the computer, but not on the iLok cloud. (including Slate plugins that are bought instead of part of a subscription)

The reason why this is even a problem in the first place is because of all the piracy. Not piracy, no software protection. It’s a problem that shouldn’t have existed in the first place, but now we all have to bear the pain because of the actions of a few.

There is no perfect solution, unfortunately. I also thought that it would be better for Waves to offer online licenses too, but that doesn’t work for systems without an internet connection. Believe it of not there are plenty of studios that like to keep their systems isolated, so it begins to be a problem. Consider also, what happens if the internet decides to go down for whatever reason.

If you have a valid WUP or subscription you do also get a second license. So one way to approach this type of potential issue is to keep your secondary licenses on a backup drive, just in case of emergency. Of course all emergency systems need to be periodically tested, so I would suggest firing it up once or twice a year to make sure everything is working as expected. Of even just before an important job.

It’s not ideal, but it will get you past problems like this and it will even work if there is sudden internet drop out.
