I’m struggling to understand why the C6 plugin, when applied to an audio track suddenly becomes so hot that the audio file becomes an unusable distortion?

Welcome to the Waves Forum.
Applying the C6 with default settings should not turn your signal to distorted or unusable.
This is making sure you’re not coming already too hot before even applying additional compression with inserting the C6. Does this repeat itself when using a different audio signal as well ?
If so please Contact Technical Support so they can further troubleshoot the issue.

On average how loud is the signal you are passing to C6??
