Waves Central cannot detect the free space on your OS drive

I’m sure the team is working on this, but I ran into this error launching Waves Central on a fairly fresh Windows 11 install.

(Full error text below the “Details”)

[Window Title] Error

[Main Instruction]
Waves Central has run into some issues

[Content]
Waves Central cannot detect the free space on your OS drive. Therefore, it cannot install software or manage licenses.

This may be because:

  1. An antivirus is blocking Waves Central from accessing Windows Management Interface (WMI). Please disable your antivirus software and try running Waves Central again.

  2. You do not have sufficient privileges to access WMI services. Please try another Administrator account in order to run Waves Central as an Admin, or contact your machine’s Admin.

  3. Your WMI Repository is missing or corrupted. Try to run Windows repair, or contact your machine’s Admin.

[OK]

It turns out that Waves Central depends on the wmic.exe tool that used to be included in Windows. If you keep updating from an old version that had it, it’ll still be there, but if you do a fresh install then it may not be.

Like I say, the team has other ways to do the same check (happy to provide technical info privately if they need it), but the way to fix it is to re-enable the WMIC feature. To do this:

  • search Start for “Optional Features”
  • click “View Features” (should be the most obvious/highlighted button)
  • click “See available features” and type “wmic” in the search box
  • if you see it there, check the box and click “Add (1)”
  • if not, it’s already installed (go back to “See added features” and search, it should be there) and you’ve got a different problem

It may be slow to install, but once it’s there, Waves Central is quite happy again. Hope this helps someone!
