System requirements for Live Tracks 2.0

Our church just acquired a LV1 classic console and we are thinking of using Tracks Live 2.0 for recording and virtual soundcheck in the future. I noticed that the system requirements for Tracks recommend that you have 16 GB of RAM on the computer. We currently dont have any computer with more than 8 GB so I was wondering if the program would still work and if so, what kind of “problems” we could expect with not enough RAM?

Tracks Live is usually one of the lowest overhead apps for recording, so you’re unlikely to do better with anything else if those are the only PCs you’ve got.

The main problem you could expect is audio glitching in recorded files if the hard drive can’t keep up and you run out of RAM. More RAM gives more chances for the hard drive to catch up, and since hard drives generally write in bursts, this can make a significant difference.

It’s easy enough to test though - connect up as many tracks as you possibly can and record for a bit (silence should be fine, or noise generators) and watch the system monitor/task manager for RAM use. If it stays steady and less than 100%, you’re probably going to be fine. Just make sure nothing else on the machine is using a lot (don’t run Chrome, for example  ).

And if you do have problems, well, frankly a church that can buy an LV1C can also buy an 8GB RAM stick, even these days. Don’t be afraid to ask for a PC upgrade if you need it, it should be able to be covered. Most of the ones I work with can barely afford to get even entry-level digital mixers,[1] so you’re already blessed to be getting an LV1 there!

  1. Though I do prefer to set churches up with the X32 for other reasons besides cost, but being one of the cheapest certainly helps. ↩︎

Steve is on point with this.

You can also keep your memory overhead low by making sure Tracks is the only thing you have running and there are no non-essential background processes running. Windows systems are particularly bad for that.
