So I havent used RVox for a long time and I use small portions of Silk vocal so Ive been trying to combine the 2 as Silk is meant to have RVox in it.
However
Im doing a very sparse acoustic for a client and Im about to print the mix but I notice that there is a jump of volume at the very start of the vocal.
I know its def Silk and its not makeup, its barely doing 2db of gain reduction and a bit of reso suppression on the mid band
I checked ChatGPT and its so full of BS…so I thought Id go old school and ask here
Cheers
Or if anyone can refer me to a resource that would solve the issue that would be great
Is it just a momentary jump and then the volume settles back down or does it stay at that louder level??
One way around this is to see if there is a parameter in particular that is the source of this issue and then maybe try using automation at the start to ease it in a bit more. If it’s no parameter in particular you could try automating the gain knob.
As in to why this is happening, I haven’t got a clue. It’s new to me. Do you have the side chain active, could that be it??
Hi @simon.a.billington
its soft for a second then jumps up…I think it does it later on too after there is a break in the vox. Pic of the settings shone…its bypassed because I read suggestions that it was the compressor first kicking in so I muted it and ran a short clip just before the track proper
Also, is there any back door to turn the harmonics of the compressor off? as it seems to have the same harmonics as Rvox and I assume thats intentional. Only problem this is a creamy AEA ribbon through a beautiful tube pre and I dont want any more “vintage” applied to it…just controlling the clean. Enough vintage saturation already
It is a bit strange for sure. I had my own theory about the gate note opening up fully at first, but you’re not bending using it here, so that wouldn’t be the case.
There’s no way to tuen the harmonics off, but you can simply just use the Dynamics module for sketching, but then turning it off and using another compressor plugin of choice to do the same job. the Waves IDX, if you’re looking for something simple, clean and intelligent.
Back to your original problem, it’s a tough one. I’m assuming you don’t have any automation buried in the mix??. Outside that you could try increasing the Speed parameter. I doubt that it would have any effect, but better to try it on the outside chance it does.
Hi @simon.a.billington
In the end, I just created a simpler workflow using Apulsoft SplitS, Sonnox Soften etc and its magic; by far the best outcome over 40 years of mixing so, whilst Silk caused me to dive deeper, Im still happy
In the end it was Silk but rather RComp which was fed the esses and choked on compressing it. Ive used it for decades but time to move on
Thanks again for your replies and concern…greatly appreciated Simon
