I’m new to plugins and I have a question. I like what I’ve seen the Silk Vocal and what the Greg Wells Voice Centric do. My question is, can they both be used on the same vocal track at the same time or will they cancel each other out?
You can pretty much use any plugin freely without them cancelling each other out.
The only time that would happen is generally user error. Like using an equalizer to cut 3dB at around 5kHz, and then using another one to cut around 3dB at 5kHz.
The only real problems you face with stacking plugins is “overcooking” and using too much CPU or creating too much “latency”.
Overcooking generally means doing too much to something which in the end will drain the life and make things sound too over processed and synthetic. Less is more is the adage often used in creating and mixing music.
Consider also that the more plugins you are using the more you are demanding from your CPU and the more latency it can potentially add. So keeping things minimal will help in this department too, especially if you are still recording.
A slight digression from the subject, but yeah, ultimately you CAN stack Silk Vocals with GW Voice Centric if it doesnt demand too much from your CPU or add too much latency and its not making things sound too over processed.
…
When you have finished recording and are the mix process, latency, which is the delay between playing a note and actually hearing it, is not as important, so you can get away with more. You can also freeze tracks in alot of DAWs that will take the strain of the CPU and can easily enough be reversed if you want to make last minute changes.
So the thing I do is while building the track focus mainly on getting it down and try to avoid any effects that are higher on the CPU side. I’ll also avoid oversample, as that will add BOTH latency and CPU usage. When I’m ready to mix I can then turn on some oversampling features and replace certain effects with better ones.
