Just wanted to throw out a very simple feature request for StudioVerse Instruments…which is a great little plugin host…
If you could allow inserting more than one instrument in the chain. There are plenty of hybrid instruments now that output MIDI control, like Scaler. Allow MIDI in all the way through each slot and out. I know this works because ive built a sort of prototype with JUCE HostPluginDemo.
Thank you!
You actually can. Just insert Instrument Layers at the start of the chain and it will create a split each with its own instrument and effects chain. You’re not limited to just two layers either.
Although, there’s only so much you’d be able to stack before you start maxing out the CPU, You’d get more milage out of older or simpler instruments that demand less resources.
No, unfortunately, not exactly. Yes, it will allow a MIDI “plugin”, but only Waves internal flavored in the first slot, or the first slot of a instrument layer.
Go try inserting Scaler 2 or 3 into the first slot, and it will then disable any more instrument plugins and only allow effect plugins.
The built in Waves MIDI plugins are nice, but nothing compared to Scaler 3.
I would like it to allow instruments in all slots, regardless. OR at least the first two slots.
Thanks for the suggestion though.
Here I have an example of 3, non-Waves VST3 synths. All stacked using Instrument Layers. What am I missing??
Oh wait, I just reread what typed earlier. You mean using the MIDI output of an instrument?!? Yeah, I missed that small detail.
In that case, I believe you are right. And it would be a good feature to add in. Logic allows MIDI sidechaining now, so if you place instruments inside a summing stack it’s a way of achieving pretty much the same thing. The who setup can even be saved as patch…. But that only helps Logic users.
If you have ever opened up Reaper or Bitwig, in their tracks which, are more hybrid, you can add an instrument in the first slot in the “rack”/insert slot. That could be something like reason rack plugin, with a player and midi output, then insert another instrument/synth to be controlled or played. It nice and tidy and keep everything on the same track.
My issue is, those DAWs are not ones I use consistently for composing/producing which is in Cubase, and it’s archaic, non-hybrid framework, is something I am trying to work around. Waves Instrument rack is the closest thing to make this work without messy MIDI track routing. So, I am just going to build one myself using JUCE. All I really need is two of those hybrid slots…most of the time.
Yeah I understand. Logic has its drawbacks too. While it has its MIDI-FX, you can’t put an instrument plugin there. That would be super cool. You can at least sidechain the midi from another track. That’s still pretty new, but at least we have that.
What really sucks in Logic is passing midi and controller information to plugins on an audio track. You just can’t do it. You can have one midi controlled effect at the top of the chain and you have to sidechain audio to that. Which requires a second track for the audio. This makes simple tasks like triggering a pitch tuner/autotune from a keyboard really cumbersome.
It dates back to early 2000s. Making the who sytem really archaic by todays standards. We’ve all been pushing for full midi integration for years now. Hopefully one day soon we’ll get it.
At least I now understand what your after and agree it would be a good feature to have as Logic users would also benefit from it.
